Recommended Food & Experiences
Toko Bu Dewi
Indonesian Restaurant
This hidden gem is the best Indonesian food in the city full of incredible chefs. The storefront is small and hidden on Janvossensteeg, and you'll be ordering with a mix of locals who have uncovered this amazing spot. Take lunch to go and picnic at the fort or near the canal in Huigpark.
InspireArts
Creative Studio
This studio regularly offers classes and workshops in English & Dutch, focused on building connections within the greater Leiden community through art and creativity. Check their calendar for unique experiences during your trip, and take home incredible souvenirs and once in a lifetime memories.
Brasserie de Poort
Dinner in the City Gate
This gorgeous scenic restaurant is located in a historic city gatehouse, overlooking the water. It specialises in "shared dining" with a focus on fresh, varied dishes, with seafood and vegetarian options. Inside, the vibes are of a cozy, glass, greenhouse and it transforms into the perfect hideaway in bad weather.
Speeltuinvereniging
De Doorbraak
If you're traveling with children, be sure to stop in this nature playground. It's a scenic 10-minute walk from the city centre, and is bursting with hidden spots and tunnels, natural hideaways, and a waterfall cascading over the in-park shop. It overlooks the Zijnsingel, and is adjacent to the historic cemetery, under huge shade trees.
Vlot Grand Cafe
Floating Coffee & Snacks
Sunny and glittery from the disco ball hanging above you, this coz, and floating restaurant is located on the Galgewater canal. The service is so friendly and inviting, and while there are many breakfast and lunch options, the pea soup (erwtensoep in Dutch) is particularly world class.
Leiden Supping
Get Closer to the Canals
You've gotten your walk in but you're ready to take your adventure to the water. With Leiden Supping, it’s all about fun, relaxation, and adventure on the water. Paddle-boarding on the canals is a uniquely Leiden experience. You'll be literally immersing yourself in the city as you paddle past historic facades, glide under bridges, and through the heart of the city.
Estaminet Schommelen
Drinks With Locals
If you're looking for "gezellig" you've found the right spot, but also make sure you pick up some Dutch ordering skills (start with Mag ik een biertje, alsjeblieft?). A great selection of craft and international beers on tap, they also have whiskey and occasionally live music. The staff is friendly, and the atmosphere is laid-back.
Museum de Lakenhal
Visit the Dutch Masters
Leiden's premier art and history museum is housed in a stunning 17th-century cloth inspection hall, and home to Old Masters and contemporary art. You'll see true masterpieces by Rembrandt, Lucas van Leyden, Jan Lievens, and Jan Steen, alongside exhibits on Leiden’s rich history, including the Siege of 1574. They have wonderful enrichment experiences for kids as well. Closed Mondays.
