Leiden's Shadows: A Dark History Tour
Plagues, Poisoners, Prisons & Graves
Service Description
With 1000+ years of history, no place is as peaceful and idyllic as it may seem. Step beyond Leiden’s picturesque canals and uncover its darker past, and the invaders, residents, and adventurers that fell victim to its charms. Leiden is often remembered as a university city of canals and Rembrandt. But behind the golden façades lies a darker history of plague pits, public executions, serial poisonings, and prisons where suspects vanished behind stone walls. Our 2 hour Walking Tour winds around the dark corners of the city at dusk. This walking tour explores stories of crime, punishment, plague, and unrest that shaped the city behind closed doors and shadowed streets. From public executions to hidden prisons, you’ll hear the unsettling tales that rarely make it into guidebooks. Led by knowledgeable guides, this experience reveals how fear, justice, and survival intertwined in Leiden’s history. It’s an atmospheric journey into the city’s lesser-known side, where every corner holds a story that’s as chilling as it is fascinating. Presented in the evening, we recommend this tour for guests ages 12+.
